Florida Governor Ron DeSantis held a news conference on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, in Tallahassee, FL about a scathing report on ’60 Minutes’ that suggested DeSantis favored Publix and wealthy communities during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Governor DeSantis explained how the story was falsely portrayed in ’60 Minutes’ in the video published on April 7, 2021, “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis attacks ’60 Minutes’ COVID-19 vaccine report“, below:
The original ’60 Minutes’ story suggested that there was a possible link between a recent donation of $100,000 and the state’s partnership with Publix stores for vaccine distribution. But beyond spotlighting the public finance records, ’60 Minutes’ never offered any evidence to support the significant assertion and link the donation with the partnership. After the story aired, the Democratic director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Democratic county mayor of Palm Beach County both responded publicly, saying that partnering with Publix was not suggested by any one from DeSantis’ office. Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz also tweeted, “I said this before and I’ll say it again. [Publix] was recommended by [Florida Division of Emergency Management] and [Florida Department of Public Health]. Period! Full stop!”
Bipartisan efforts are needed to put out the fire of misinformation.
