The world has spoken: It is not acceptable to terminate another human life in such a manner, regardless race, gender, background. Derek Chauvin, a 19 year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department, is facing charges of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, and could face up to 40 years in state prison. Chauvin’s trial began on March 8, 2021, at the Hennepin County Government Center. Opening statements from the prosecution and the defense were heard on Day 1, March 29, 2021. Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell started opening statements saying that “Mr. Chauvin betrayed his badge” while defense attorney Eric Nelson said that “Chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do.”It marked the first time that a judge in Minnesota authorized cameras to show a full criminal trial.
