On Sunday, March 21, 2021, at 9:11 a.m., Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary, defended Biden administration’s decision to not expel children arriving in the U.S. amid a surge of migrants along the southwestern border, saying “that’s not who we are.”
Mayorkas said, during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, that “the border is closed” and that “the U.S. is expelling families and adults, but will not turn back young, vulnerable children.” He also added that the Biden administration was working to develop new policies to address the problem with Mexico and Central American countries that are the source of the asylum seekers. The rapid increase of migrants trying to enter U.S. has become an urgent challenge for President Biden, only two months into his office. In February, U.S. border agents apprehended more than 100,000 migrants, a 28% increase from the previous month.
