Since 2010, as part of the broader effort to promote cleaner energy, Meijer had been offering EV charging facilities at select stores and on its corporate campus site.
Now, on March 18, 2021, Meijer (a Midwestern retailer from Grand Rapids, Michigan) is working with EVgo (of California) to install electric vehicle charging stations at Meijer’s Supercenters, to be rolled out this summer. The EVgo public fast charging stations will be providing Meijer customers with the convenience of reliable fast charging for their vehicles as they shop. The partnership will add to the more than 800 fast charging locations EVgo already owns and operates today, while growing EVgo’s footprint and base of more than 220,000 customers in more than 67 metropolitan areas across 34 states. EVgo charging stations are capable of powering all fast-charge capable vehicles on the road today, including Teslas, pick-up trucks, and newly announced vehicles scheduled to come to market in the next year. EVgo is owned by LS Power, a New York based development, investment, and operating company focused on leading-edge solutions for the North American power and energy infrastructure sector.
Meijer has 256 Supercenters and grocery stores across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and Wisconsin. It is privately owned and family operated since its founding in 1934. Director of environmental compliance and sustainability at Meijer, Erk Petrovskis said, “Enabling the adoption of electric vehicles is a vital part of decarbonizing passenger vehicle transportation, and Meijer can play a role in enabling that transition.”
Meijer customers will have access to EVgo charging stations capable of 100 kilowatt to 350 kilowatt fast charging. EVgo will manage the installation, ongoing operation, and maintenance of the charging stations.
