McConnell called the commission “partisan by design” with only four Republicans to seven Democrats, in the video published on Feb 24, 2021, “McConnell rails against Democrats for “partisan” commission investigation into January 6th“, below: Former President Trump’s second impeachment trial has concluded, but questions still remain over the Jan. 6 insurrection. Now, former 9/11 Commission co-chairs Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton are calling on President Biden to create an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the assault at the U.S. Capitol. Kean, who is also the former New Jersey governor, joins Judy Woodruff to discuss, in the video published on Feb. 15, 2021, “Former 9/11 investigator joins bipartisan calls for new commission to probe Capitol attack“, below: McConnell rejected Pelosi’s proposed commission of 7:4, with Democrat majority on the panel. McConnell also said any large-scale review of the insurrection must also include an analysis of broader political violence. He also is open to a commission narrowly focused on security on the Hill. Two Senate committees are pressing on with a joint bipartisan investigation into the security failures that allowed pro-Trump mob to breach the Capitol while lawmakers were certifying Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.  The Senate Homeland Security and Rules committees, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI, these three entities came under heavy criticism during the panel’s first hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021. The Senate Homeland Security and Rules committees will hold a hearing next week with officials from the Pentagon. Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund and acting D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee told senators that the Pentagon slow-walked their urgent pleas for assistance from the National Guard; they also indicated that they were not informed about intelligence reports regarding extremist groups gearing up for violence. Next hearing is scheduled to be on next Wednesday, March 3, 2021, featuring testimony from Robert Salesses, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and global security; assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, Jill Sanborn, and head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Melissa Smislova.
