Among all of the presidential candidates in 2020, Andrew Yang proposed the most revolutionary economic policy. His signature policy was the “Freedom Dividend,” a universal basic income (UBI) of $1,000 a month directly to every American adult (age 18 and over), unconditionally, as a response to job displacement by automation, one of the primary factors that he claims led to Donald Trump‘s election in 2016.
As an attorney and successful entrepreneur, Yang didn’t have many of the traditional presidential credentials. He had focused on boosting start-ups through his Venture for America nonprofit. Yang had built his campaign around what he calls The Freedom Dividend — a $1,000 per month “universal basic income” intended to cushion the impact of technological advances that have begun to supplant large swaths of the American workforce. Americans of every income level would receive it, with the enormous cost financed by a value-added tax under which the bottom 94% of earners would come out ahead, in the video “Andrew Yang On UBI And Human-Centered Capitalism“, below:
That is why it is terrific that Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey had donated $15 million to a group of mayors, Mayors For A Guaranteed Income , to test out the concept of Universal Basic Income. Universal basic income (or UBI) is a key part of Andrew Yang’s campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. On Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted his support for Yang’s candidacy. Musk and Yang have stated similar views on the need for universal basic income in the United States. A main tenet of Yang’s campaign platform is his pledge to provide $1,000 a month to all American citizens 18 and older. Yang refers to this payment as a “Freedom Dividend” that will become necessary as robots and automation replace humans more rapidly than people can find and be retained for new jobs. UBI is making its way from the fringes to a serious topic of debate thanks to a growing number of high profile advocates, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Richard Branson, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. So far, the results of some UBI experiments have been controversial. Is America ready for universal basic income? In the video “Elon Musk And Andrew Yang Support UBI – Is America Ready?“, below:
At the moment, Andrew Yang is running for Mayor of New York City. If Andrew Yang becomes the Mayor of New York City, residents of NYC will have a much better chance of taking part in Freedom Dividend, Universal Basic Income experiment. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrew Yang’s Freedom Dividend will surely be welcomed by most residents of NYC.
