The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a confirmation hearing to consider Pete Buttigieg for transportation secretary. Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, would be the first openly LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member. Buttigieg outlined his vision to uphold the safety of travelers, improve the nation’s infrastructure system and fulfill President Biden’s infrastructure goals amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to his prepared opening remarks.
