President Trump tweeted late Tuesday, December 1, 2020,  that he will veto the National Defense Authorization Act unless Congress repeals Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which critics say unfairly shields social media platforms from liability over items posted on their platforms, in the video “Trump threatens to veto defense bill“, below: President Trump said he would veto the $740 billion National Defense Authorization Act unless it includes a measure eliminating a federal law protecting tech companies such as Facebook and Twitter, in the video “Trump threatens defense bill veto over Big Tech“, below: President Trump tweeted that he will veto the National Defense Authorization Act if Section 230 of the Communication Decency Act is not terminated. The tweet reads, “Section 230, which is a liability shielding gift from the U.S. to “Big Tech” (the only companies in America that have it – corporate welfare!), is a serious threat to our National Security & Election Integrity. Our Country can never be safe & secure if we allow it to stand. Therefore, if the very dangerous & unfair Section 230 is not completely terminated as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), I will be forced to unequivocally VETO the Bill when sent to the very beautiful Resolute desk. It has shielded providers from a considerable amount of liability around the content users generate. Recently, however, both Democrats and Republicans have asked for Section 230 to be revised, for different reasons. Libertarians have tended to argue that it should be left alone and if it’s not, it could end speech (albeit imperfect) online as we know it. The concern is that if a gatekeeper is sought to regulate the platforms, whether the government or Silicon Valley authorities, those gatekeepers will have an extreme amount of power and may use that to throttle speech even more.
