As a result of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many more voters are expected to vote by mail-in ballots this year than in the past. Therefore, it is reasonable to anticipate the need to increase the budget for the United States Post Service in election year 2020.
Recently U.S. Postal Service is warning that some mail-in ballots may not be counted in time due to delivery time delays resulting from cost-cutting measures by the Trump’s hand-picked postmaster general during election year. Senior Fellow of Center for a New American Security, Carrie Cordero, states several issues involved: 1. that Congress need to act to infuse money for the money needed for U.S. Postal Service during election year 2020 2. President Trump is undermining confidence in the election by saying mail-in ballots is corrupt and fraudulent when history has shown otherwise. Finally, Cordero points out that Trump is laying the groundwork for potential legal challenges after the election. But by creating doubt in this election, Trump is essentially undermining his own party.
In an interview, President Trump admitted the U.S. Postal Service needs more money to handle ballots in November, but he doesn’t necessarily want to provide it. Ben Tracy reports, in the video “President Trump reveals why he doesn’t want to provide more funding to the Postal Service“, below:
President Donald Trump acknowledged in order for there to be widespread voting by mail, the United States Postal Services needs more money. Now Trump says he is resisting it and revealed why. He sees it as what could amount to a bargaining chip with Democrats as they are negotiating on Capitol Hill to get another coronavirus legislation bill signed. President Barack Obama accuses President Trump trying to “kneecap” postal service to suppress votes. CNN’s Kaitlin Collins reports, in the video “President Trump reveals why he resists funding US postal service“, below:
President Trump is opposing the Democrats’ calls for additional funding for the U.S. Postal Service, as coronavirus relief talks remain stalled on Capitol Hill.
