On Friday, August 7, 2020, President Trump teased an executive order to require health insurers to cover all pre-existing conditions, something previously established under the Affordable Care Act which Trump administration is suing to dismantle. Trump said, during a news conference at his Bedminster property in New Jersey, in italics, below:
“Over the next two weeks I’ll be pursuing a major executive order requiring health insurance companies to cover all preexisting conditions for all companies,” In the video “I will pursue an EO requiring health insurance companies to cover all pre-existing conditions“, below:
President Trump claimed that such a move has never been done before, though insurance companies are already required to cover patients with preexisting conditions under the Affordable Care Act, enacted in 2010. Even though President Trump is insisting that he will protect the preexisting conditions, the Justice Department argued in a Supreme Court briefing in June, 2020, that the entire affordable Care Act should be invalidated. Overturning the Affordable Care Act would take away health insurance coverage for about 20 million people, particularly felt during the coronavirus pandemic infecting 5 million Americans.
Throughout his first term, President Trump has promised to unveil a health care plan of his own, but has yet to do so while seeking reelection. In an interview that aired on July 19, 2020, “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace asked President Trump about the coronavirus, upcoming elections and civil unrest in the United States. During this interview, Trump promised a comprehensive health care bill within two weeks. Two weeks later, he said it would likely be out within a month.
