After weeks of clashes between protesters and federal officers, Oregon Governor Kate Brown said that federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers beginning Thursday, July 30, 2020, that all customs and border protection and ICE officers will leave downtown Portland, and shortly thereafter will begin going home. Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said the agreement is conditioned on state police securing federal property along with federal protective service, in the video “Gov. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright reminds us that protest is a very important part of being American and a democratic society. And she further reminds us that a fascist “is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.” in her book Fascism: A Warning. She also notes that fascism is a process for gaining power, starting by exacerbating the difference among people, setting one group against another, by calling press as enemy of the people by some one who thinks he/she is above the law.
Ted Wheeler said he wants the officers held accountable. He said he does not have the jurisdiction to order them to leave. “I want them to deescalate the situation, not add to an already highly volatile situation,” he said, in the video “Wheeler: Portland has no jurisdiction over federal officers“, below:
