The U.S. House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, regarding what they characterized as the unprecedented “politicization” of the Department of Justice (DOJ) under U.S. President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr.
Witnesses, including both current and former DOJ officials, spoke about the ongoing alleged corruption in the Department stemming from the attorney general and the president.
Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Donald Ayer testified to Congress about political influence inside the Justice Department and said in his view, Barr poses the “greatest threat” to our rule of law.
During his opening remarks at the hearing, Ayer went over his allotted time, resulting in Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert repeatedly tapping on his desk to interrupt. Gohmert and Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler then got into a heated exchange regarding procedural rules.
Also, ex-Roger Stone prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky testified, alleging that during his hearing, Roger Stone was treated differently from other defendants “in his circumstances” due to his friendship with Trump. Stone was convicted on all seven counts of an indictment that accused him of lying to Congress, tampering with a witness and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign co-ordinated with Russia to tip the 2016 election.
The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee also intends to subpoena Barr to testify about the firing of a federal prosecutor whose office had been investigating Trump’s personal lawyer, in the video “U.S. House Judiciary Committee holds hearing on the “politicization” of the DOJ under Trump, FULL“, below:

What I saw was the Department of Justice exerting significant pressure on the line prosecutors in the case to obscure the correct Sentencing Guidelines calculation to which Roger Stone was subject – and to water down and in some cases outright distort the events that transpired in his trial and the criminal conduct that gave rise to his conviction…What I heard – repeatedly – was that Roger Stone was being treated differently from any other defendant because of his relationship to the President… I was also told that the acting U.S. Attorney was giving Stone such unprecedentedly favorable treatment because he was “afraid of the President.”
