In this turbulent time, Americans need to be reminded that most police officers in USA are decent human being with the goal of maintaining peace and helping people in their communities.
A video of a member of the New York police department is going viral with his speech condemning the way the politicians and media have been treating cops after the death of George Floyd, in the video “NYC Police Speech Goes Viral: “Our Legislators Abandoned Us, the Press is Vilifying Us“, below:
The highest-ranking uniformed member of the NYPD took a knee to show his support for protesters at Washington Square Park, in the video “NYC’s highest-ranking uniformed member takes a knee, hugs George Floyd protesters“, below:
The real issues, fear-based training, drug war, and qualified immunity, need to be addressed, in the video “The Broken Policing System, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Netflix“, below:
Contrary to my pessimistic friends, there is much hope and optimism that may be in store for every one in the future because for the first time in a long time that fear-based police training and qualified immunity are being re-evaluated. The future will be brighter as long as our society is willing to progress or improve. And keep in mind that most policemen are not like Derek Chauvin.
In the video “Police: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)“, below:
The issue regarding drug war is best summarized in the video “The Wire – This drug thing, this ain’t police work“, below:
In it, Howard Colvin (Western District Major) describes to a young police sergeant, the problem with America’s Drug war. In this reflection of modern day policing it serves to justify Colvin’s desperate attempt to legalize drugs in his district of Baltimore. “This drug thing, this ain’t police work. No, it ain’t. I mean, I can send any fool with a badge and a gun up on them corners and jack a crew and grab vials. But policing? I mean, you call something a war and pretty soon everybody gonna be running around acting like warriors. They gonna be running around on a damn crusade, storming corners, slapping on cuffs, racking up body counts. And when you at war, you need a fucking enemy. And pretty soon, damn near everybody on every corner is your fucking enemy. And soon the neighborhood that you’re supposed to be policing, that’s just occupied territory.”
The path to solution starts by recognizing the cause of the problem first. At this point, fear-based training, drug war, and qualified immunity may be resolved by the 5 demands of the protesters:
- Full demilitarization of the police.
- Establish Federal Department of Police Oversight to end corrupt internal investigations.
- Enact Universal Training Standards for police.
- Require officers to be licensed akin to doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.
- Repeal and replace Section 1983 which protects police officers from being sued for violating constitutional rights.
So finally, local residents may relate to local police on a human level rather than having local residents and local police relating to each other as enemies.
