We need to face the fact that our local newspapers industry is on the verge of collapse. If they do, it will hurt all of us, because politicians may get away with corruptions and we would know less about what is going on in our communities. Did you know that even before COVID-19, there were 225 counties in USA without a single local newspaper (according to Patriot Act below, and 171 counties without a local newspaper according to an article dated 2018) and almost half of the counties in USA have only one newspaper. Communities that is no longer covered by daily newspapers is known as “News Deserts“? According to a UNC School of Journalism and Media study, more than 1,300 communities in the USA are considered news deserts.
In the face of layoffs, Google and Facebook taking over 85% of digital marketing or ad, the coronavirus, and private equity firms like Alden Global Capital trying to strip it for parts, the local news industry is on the verge of collapse. Hasan showcases the important work of local newspapers and why we need them now more than ever, in the video “The News Industry Is Being Destroyed, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Netflix“, below:

Back in 2014, at a TEDx Talk, “Do newspapers matter in the digital age? Lisa DeSisto, TEDxDirigo“, below:
This talk (above) was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Against all odds, the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram is investing in journalism to reinvigorate a 152 year old newspaper brand. In the industry that everyone acknowledges is dying, why do we think we can buck the trend? And most importantly, why does quality journalism matter in Maine?
Lisa DeSisto is the CEO of MaineToday Media and publisher of the Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram, Kennebec Journal, and Morning Sentinel. Prior to her move to Maine in 2012, Ms. DeSisto was chief advertising officer for The Boston Globe and general manager of Boston.com. Ms. DeSisto has a strong background in digital media, having joined Boston.com just two days after the site was launched in 1995. At MaineToday Media, she is leading a turnaround strategy by investing in journalists and journalism dedicated to covering the news and people of Maine. Ms. DeSisto serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. To this day, her proudest achievement was her selection as Class Clown by the Stoneham, MA Class of 1981. She lives with her family, a couple of goats, and a herd of alpaca in North Yarmouth.
