Florida took part in the nationwide protests against the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd. The intense but mostly peaceful protests across the nation led to curfews (in various parts of Florida and else where in USA) that went into effect starting on May 30, 2020. This nationwide protests resulted in more serious charge (second degree murder rather than third degree murder) for the perpetrator, more open discussions and awareness of racism, legislative measures in eliminating choke holds, carotid holds, and no-knock warrants, funding to investigate local police departments, national data base of police misconduct, data base of local police to track information on use of force, and ways of improving police training and relationship between police and residents. All Florida curfews were lifted as of Tuesday, June 9, 2020. The mayors and peaceful demonstrators of USA have shown the world how the system of democracy can improve and progress with time through our Bill of Rights in the Amendments of the United States Constitution, the Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom of the Press. As long as the people and their officials understand, remember, and practice these rights, the system of democracy will be safe.
