2020 has been a tough year for all of us. In addition to COVID-19 pandemic and protests for George Floyd’s death, there is now the Tropical Storm Cristobal, due to arrive near U.S. coast by Sunday, June 7, 2020. Warming of the planet earth has contributed much to the intensity of these storms. Many of us in Central Florida also received Emergency Alert for TORNADO WARNING til 9:30 pm EDT due to the outer bands of rain and thunder of the storm. So take shelter now if you are in Central Florida.
With the 7 PM Advisory from the NHC not much has changed with Cristobal since earlier. Max winds remain at 50 mph and movement is northerly at 12 mph. The current position is 235 miles from the mouth of the River. Dry air remains a big player in the structure and future impacts of the storm. Right now, the dry air is keeping most of the thunderstorms displaced from the center and well east over the eastern Gulf and Florida. However, in some recent images, thunderstorms are trying to develop near the center. The window of opportunity is closing as the storm will likely be inland within 24 hours. We have been seeing some of the fringe showers associated with Cristobal move over SE LA and S MS. So far they have been brief, tropical downpours, but anticipate more extensive coverage late tonight and especially Sunday. Rainfall and coastal flooding are the main concerns, although sustained winds of over 40 mph are likely across a good portion of our area. Flooding will threaten areas where rain bands set up, and it is still unknown exactly where that may be. Rain bands tomorrow will also bring the threat of weak, spin-up tornadoes. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted the entire area for a high risk of flash flooding Sunday, in the video “7 PM-Tropical Storm Cristobal Update“, below:

A recent study by scientist Jim Kossin found that tropical storms are 30% more likely to reach hurricane strength than they were just 40 years ago.
