As China seeks to pass a new law that may affect the freedom of Hong Kong, the U.S. has released an official statement criticizing the proposed new national security law. Choi Won-jong has the details. The U.S. government has condemned China’s newly proposed security measures on Hong Kong’s political freedoms. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a press release on Friday, that the Trump administration has officially made an announcement to criticize the Chinese government’s new proposal to impose national security legislation on Hong Kong. Trump administration officials added that the new legislation ignores the will of the people in Hong Kong. Following the statement, in Washington, President Trump warned of potential punishments if the Chinese government passes the new legislation on Hong Kong. “I don’t know what it is because nobody knows yet. If it happens, we will address that issue very strongly.” White House economic adviser, Kevin Hassett has also warned that Beijing’s move could harm the Chinese economy. He told White House reporters, (quote) the Chinese move in Hong Kong is going to be very, very bad for the Chinese economy and for the Hong Kong economy. The U.S. is increasing economic pressure on China, and the U.S. Commerce Department has recently added 33 Chinese companies and other institutions to the U.S. economic blacklist due to human rights violations and concerns over using weapons of mass destruction. Former ambassador to China Guy Saint-Jacques says China should know better than to threaten Hong Kong’s autonomy, in the video “China’s proposed Hong Kong law puts West in tough position“, below:
Will China have the patience to wait until 2047 remains to be seen. Given that Hong Kong is no longer as critically important to China as in the past, will it be worth it for China not to be patient?
