America’s covid-19 death toll is higher than anywhere else in the world—and is continuing to mount. What’s behind the country’s coronavirus pandemic failings? The Economist takes a look at the reasons and factors behind high COVID-19 death toll in America, in the video “Covid-19: Why is America’s death toll so high? The Economist“, below:
- Trump administration was slow to act: PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) was not enough and tests are not enough.
- Trump was more concerned about stock market.
- First tests created by CDC did not work.
- Strict regulations slowed the availability of tests.
- Every state responded differently to COVID-19: New York governor announced state lockdown on March 20, 2020, while Florida did not lockdown until two weeks later; state borders remained open when different states had different lockdown dates created continued spread of COVID-19 nationwide.
- Partisan politics: Republican governors are slower in implementing social distancing measures. Democratic voters have cut travel more than Republican voters.
- American hospitals are business oriented and therefore has no incentive to have extra beds in ICU and ventilators or pulmonologists to sepcialize in intubation.
- About 12% of Americans do not have health insurance and 23% of those with health insurance are underinsured.
- More than half of working age people get their health insurance through their employers. But during COVID-19 pandemic, more than 20 million Americans are claiming unemployment and may therefore be losing access to their health insurance.
- Despite the social distancing guideline provided by President Trump on April 16, 2020, for how and when social distancing measures could be lifted, he made it clear that the next move would be up to individual state. But President Trump immediately undermined his own guidelines by showing support for a growing protest movement demanding an end to lockdowns. This disjointed response to the pandemic.
As indicated at the end of this video, “Donald Trump has presided over and done much to encourage America’s disjointed response to the pandemic. The combination of an erratic president, federalized government, and a complex and fragmented health-care system means America’s already high death toll will continue to mount.”
This COVID-19 pandemic strengthens the argument for National Health Care.
It is important that the President of the United States has clear understanding of the U.S. Constitution and has a clear head.
It is important to diminish partisan politics and diminish forces of disparity among groups. We need to think and do what is good for our country as a whole. More funding and experienced leadership will be needed to prepare for the pandemics of the future.

Let us be wary as the country will be reopened. Let’s be cautious and wear facial coverings in public and continue practicing social distancing (at least 6 feet from others), for COVID-19 is not yet gone. It does appear that U.S. is deficient in testing and contact tracing at the moment. Let’s hope this will soon change. It is not likely that our life will return to normal until 2022, after the vaccine for COVID-19 will become available to general public globally.
