VA Study Finds No Benefit In Treating COVID-19 Patients With Hydroxychloroquine

Despite how President Donal Trump had touted the malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, for treating the novel coronavirus (aka COVID-19), the use of hydroxychloroquine showed no benefit but more deaths in a nationwide study with 368 male veteran patients hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection either died or discharged by April 11, 2020, of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, according to researchers.
This study, supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the University of Virginia, has been submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, but has not yet been reviewed by other scientists.

- 27.8% of patients who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died
- 11.4% of patients getting routine care died
- 22.1% of patients getting hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin died
On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, NIH issued new treatment guidelines from a panel of experts, indicating that there was not sufficient evidence to recommend for or against chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. NIH also advised against using hydroxychloroquine with azithromycin due to potential negative side effects.
A new, unpublished study found that hydroxychloroquine, a drug President Trump has cited as key in fighting coronavirus, has a higher death rate among coronavirus patients compared to those not on the drug, in the video “New study shows hydroxychloroquine didn’t work against COVID-19“, below:

Apparently other countries have also been studying the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for cases of COVID-19. In a study done in China and released on March 16, 2020: 93% of control group (no hydroxychloroquine) were tested negative with the virus after 7 days whereas in the experimental group of patients being treated with hydroxychloroquine, only 87% were tested negative with the virus after 7 days. No conclusion is drawn from this study and the study did not get much publicity.

Let us be wary as the country is reopened. Let’s be cautious and wear facial coverings in public and continue practicing social distancing (at least 6 feet from others), for COVID-19 is not yet gone. It does appear that U.S. is deficient in testing and contact tracing at the moment. Let’s hope this will soon change. It is not likely that our life will return to normal until 2022, after the vaccine for COVID-19 will become available to general public globally.
