An article, Prone Positioning in Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, published in the New England Journal of Medicine by French doctors seven years ago, showed that patients with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) who were on ventilators had lower chance of dying if they were placed on their stomachs (aka prone positioning) in the hospital. Apparently this prone positioning helps to increase the amount of oxygen getting to their lungs. Most doctors in the United States have been placing ventilated ARDS patients on their stomachs since the publication of this article. During the time of COVID-19, this piece of information really helped to save lives.

Some COVID-19 patients are experiencing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and require mechanical ventilation. While a patient is on a ventilator, Rush staff use a technique called “prone positioning” to improve oxygenation. Rush has developed a four-phase checklist to facilitate the process of placing a patient into the prone position.
