US President Donald Trump has said that he exercises total authority over reopening the economy. Speaking to reporters, the US President said that he has been there for the states and will continue to work with the states on the issue. When told that states have taken the call on opening schools & even restaurants, Trump said that he let it happen and he could have closed it up. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said President Donald Trump could probably decide when schools and businesses should re-open but noted that the president has effectively delegated those decisions to governors. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are joining an effort to coordinate on a plan to reopen their economies. As President Trump considers restarting the economy next month, governors nationwide are banding together to go their own way on reopening their states for business. Ben Tracy reports from the White House, in the video “Trump battles with governors over reopening the economy“, below:
U.S. states on both coasts formed alliances on Monday to devise regional reopenings of their economies, even though as President Trump said the authority was his alone. Governors from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island announced a Northeast coalition, while California, Oregon and Washington organized a West Coast pact. These collaborations represent about a third of the country. Still, Trump asserted at Monday’s White House coronavirus briefing that “when somebody is president of the United States, the authority is total.” Both Democratic and Republican governors quickly pushed back, noting they have the constitutional power to lift restrictions they put in place and decide when it will be safe to resume normal operations.
