The two different testing for COVID-19 are mentioned by Dr. Fauci in the video above: COVID-19 antibody testing (finger prick) and viral RNA testing (swab to the back of one’s throat). COVID-19 antibody test, also known as serological test, gives essential information about who was ill in the past with COVID-19 and has since recovered whereas viral RNA testing shows who is currently ill with COVID-19. Research suggests that specialized white blood cells or antibodies resulted to combat COVID-19 may persist for years, enabling recovered people non-infectious to others and non-susceptible to becoming ill by the COVID-19 again. With a quick finger prick, the COVID-19 antibody test would provide information about whether or not individuals would be immune and be able to return to work.

In the fight against the coronavirus, there is still one big unknown: how many people have actually contracted it, maybe even without showing any symptoms? One way to answer this question is through antibody tests. An antibody is a protective protein produced by the immune system to destroy harmful viruses and infections. When a pathogen enters the body, the immune system recognizes it and produces antibodies that dock onto the pathogen’s antigens to remove them. Later a blood test can be used to detect these antibodies in a person’s blood stream. Antibodies are also used in vaccines to make people immune to future infections. But immunity doesn’t last a lifetime in all cases. So what do we know about Sars-CoV-2? How long will people be immune after an infection? Scientists around the world have been racing to develop treatments, cures and a vaccine for COVID-19 – and are getting closer by the day. Jacob Glanville, one of the stars of Netflix documentary Pandemic, runs Distributed Bio which has been working to find an antibody therapy. On March 30, 2020, he tweeted we should get ready for a positive announcement this week. But the problem lies in the fact that this is a novel virus, much of its characteristics are unknown. So, whether or not a positive COVID-19 antibody test result would mean the person is immune or how long would the person be immune are not yet known. More research data will be needed before scientists and government officials would be able to come up with a conclusive and effective plan for reopening our economy.
So, let’s all try to stay home! Wear mask or scarf or some coverings for mouth and nose when in public area. As for individual citizens, please wash your hands often (each time for at least 20 seconds), get tested if and when you can, stop shaking hands, observe social distancing (staying at least 6 feet from others), be sure to get sufficient rest, be well nourished, exercised, drink plenty of hot water and ginger tea, and decrease unnecessary social contacts.
Some of the basics needed in prepping for potential self-quarantine:
- Hand cleanser (soap & water & hand sanitizer)
- Cleaning products: for cleaning household surfaces such as countertops, faucets, door knobs, drawer pulls, light switches, telephone, handles of brooms, mops, etc., for reference list suggested by CDC, click HERE.)
- Laundry detergent
- Food (at least 3 weeks worth of staples: beans, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, frozen food, canned soup, shelf-stable milk, or dehydrated food, etc.)
- Water (be it in bottled water form or activated carbon filter pitcher and/or distiller)
- Face masks
- Prescription meds (talk to your doctor as to how much of your prescription meds need to be stocked)
- Over-the-counter medicine (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medicine, etc.)
- Thermometer
- Robust WiFi
- Video conferencing services
- Entertainment (check out: Netflix’s Pandemic & Amazon’s Contagion)
- Exercise guides or equipment
