During the COVID-19 Stay-At-Home period, the number of unemployed Floridians have skyrocketed. Almost quarter of a million Floridians have needed to file unemployment claims. Unfortunately, Florida paid $77 million for an unemployment benefits website (by Deloitte Consulting) that is not working now for 90% or more of the people trying to use it. State auditors found the site which still have more than 600 system errors waiting to be fixed, but the state officials had no process to evaluate and/or fix them. Apparently, state auditors warned Governor Ron DeSantis about Florida’s unemployment website in a report in 2019, of its problems such as glitches, error messages, crashes, and various other problems that many Floridians are now experiencing.

Whether it’s online or through the phone, many people looking to file for unemployment benefits tell NBC 6 Responds they are having trouble with the system. Alina Machado reports, in the video “Many Reporting Issues Applying for Unemployment Benefits“, below:
The head of the Florida state agency distributing unemployment benefits acknowledged Thursday, April 2, 2020, that Floridians are experiencing difficulties applying for aid and vowed to improve the jobless assistance program, in the video “Florida to issue paper applications for unemployment benefits, improve computer system“, below:
Many Floridians are unhappy with the malfunctioning Florida Unemployment website. To see some one sharing her experience in working on the Florida Unemployment website, click HERE.
Below are some of the comments (not necessarily reflecting the view of Windermere Sun), in italics, from unhappy Floridians for the video above:
- I’ve heard that there is no unemployment money for Floridians. The state government officials have stolen from it. That is why the system riddled with denied claims, dropped and busy calls, the broken website has alluded Floridians from claiming over the course of 10 years.
- lived and worked in florida for almost 30 years, never filed a claim and now this is what i have to expect when i want to file a claim.
- ” I apologize for what you’re going through this is not caused by any of us” Yes it is, the system was made to fail from the beginning. Dumping $77 million to the pocket of all these politicians. Guess what they would probably give them $100 millions more to fix nothing. Good thing I never voted for that crook name Rick Scott.
- We pay taxes for a modern online unemployment benefits system. Why we don’t have a modern system like California, only our governor can answer.
- So lets review, we can leave the beaches open for spring break (PARTY) ooops major outbreak. Overloaded system so we will pass out paper forms to people standing in lines for hours (no distancing) but none of this was our fault. Sounds like a play straight out of trump administration.
- Apologies aside , what are you doing? “Everything we can” is not an answer. What does that mean? Specifics please. Do you know the consequences of this level of incompetence. Are you working 24/7 on this. The thing that’s crazy is you still have jobs. I hope you pay as a price equal to ours.

Comments by unhappy Floridians for this video, in italics, below:
- The unemployment benefits site is set up to discourage you from filing unemployment. They’re lying through thier teeth about claims. They’re denying people claims in the call centers. They’re supposed to waive the 5 job searches a week. Instead they’re denying claims because of no job searches. They keep showing the DEO in charge in that same lame video. I can’t see how paper is going to work with direct deposit. Plus how many months is it going to take to for people to get paid with paper claims.
- Hey people of Florida, this is your fault for electing Rick Scott and fellow Republicans! Rick Scott intentionality reorganized the unemployment system NOT to work and to significantly reduce payouts. Expect to wait months to get a payment. You get the government you deserve! Too bad.
- Republicans admit that the $77.9 million system that is now failing Florida workers is doing exactly what Scott designed it to do — lower the state’s reported number of jobless claims after the great recession. “It’s a sh– sandwich, and it was designed that way by Scott,” said one DeSantis advisor. “It wasn’t about saving money. It was about making it harder for people to get benefits or keep benefits so that the unemployment numbers were low to give the governor something to brag about.” Told you so!
An aerial footage surfaced, tweeted by ABC News on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, above a South Florida city, Hialeah, showing hundreds of residents risking potential COVID-19 exposure to get their paper applications for unemployment benefits as the state tries to fix problems with online filing:

Today, Wednesday, April 8, 2020, cars line up at an unemployment center in Hialeah, Florida, as the coronavirus craters the US economy. Weekly data shows an alarming 10 million people applied for unemployment benefits in the second half of March, as the pandemic slammed the US, in the video “Floridians line up at an unemployment centre as US jobless rate surges, AFP“, below:
The sooner the Florida state government resolves the problems associated with the Florida Unemployment web site, the less damage it would do to the Republican administration. Until then, it would save many Floridians a great deal of time, gas money, and risk of exposure to COVID-19 if just one person would upload this application for unemployment benefits some where and avail the URL to all Florida online news organizations so these trips for so many Floridians will not be necessary. So, after some research online, here is the form:
- For paper application of Department of Economic Opportunity, Reemployment Assistance Application For Services, for form in English, please click HERE.; for form in Spanish, please click HERE; for form in Creole, please click HERE.
- For the paper application information page, please click HERE.
- If you don’t have a printer, then go to any of the more than 100 FedEx Offices, CareerSource Florida locations, or the state Department of Economic Opportunity where paper applications are available
In the video “State of Florida makes applying for unemployment benefits relatively easy“, below:
*The cost of developing a new system is extremely expensive, therefore, many states have combined effort to develop new unemployment benefits systems: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia worked together to build a common system in the Southeast Consortium Unemployment Insurance Benefit Initiative (SCUBI) to replace their individual systems with a single shared system in 2014-2016.
