As the coronavirus pandemic spreads around the world, Taiwan seems to have it under control. The island is only 80 miles off the coast of mainland China and very near to where the virus originated; plus there were many daily flights to Taiwan from Wuhan. But Taiwan has only 329 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and only 5 people have died from it. Taiwan is donating 10 million masks to healthcare workers around the world, of which 2 million masks to USA.

Countries around the world are reporting shortages of protective equipment such as face masks – for medical staff and for ordinary citizens. But one country that’s avoided this problem is Taiwan. So how did they do it – and could their approach be emulated by others? In the video “How Taiwan overcomes it’s face mask shortage, Coronavirus Update“, below:

Early actions and transparency of government data are invaluable in helping to rationing masks and various resources during the pandemic.

Taiwan, despite being just 100 miles from mainland China with regular flights to and from Wuhan, has successfully staved off the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. The country has so far seen five deaths and just under 350 confirmed cases, and most schools and businesses remain open. How did Taiwan do it? “Aggressive action,” says Dr. Jason Wang, the former project manager for Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Reform Task-force. He is now the director of the Center for Policy, Outcomes and Prevention and associate professor of pediatrics and medicine at Stanford University. He speaks with us about Taiwan’s strategy and what the world can learn from it, in the video “How Taiwan Contained COVID-19: Early Action, Technology & Millions of Face Masks“, below:

Taiwan utilized: early travel bans, early testing, data tracking, social distancing, universal mask wearing, and citizens’ self governing are factors contributing to Taiwan’s success in containing COVID-19, leading to only 5 deaths.

President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, said on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, that Taiwan will donate 10 million face masks to countries severely affected by COVID-19. She made the announcement at a morning press conference at the Presidential Office building at Taipei, Taiwan. The president said that once Taiwan is able to meet domestic demand, it will provide face masks and other support to countries in need. Tsai said she hoped to demonstrate not only that “Taiwan can help,” but that “Taiwan is helping” as the world confronts the challenges of the pandemic. Tsai Ing-wen said, “Over the past months, we have seen countless acts of bravery and sacrifice from medical workers around the world. It is our duty as global citizens to give them our full support. President Tsai delivered a speech on the COVID-19 pandemic, flanked by officials who stood apart at a safe distance. She added, “We had a message for the international community. We need to step up cooperation, and that means sharing experiences and materials, and working together to develop treatments and vaccines. Pandemics cannot be stopped by one country alone. And Taiwan stands ready to do our part. Going forward, we will donate surplus masks and other supplies to our allies and countries hit hardest by COVID-19. These supplies will go to medical workers on the front lines who are working around the clock to save lives. Joseph Wu, Foreign Affairs Minister, said, “Our first round of international humanitarian aid will be for the U.S., for European countries that have been severely affected, and for our diplomatic allies. Besides the mask donation, the government has ordered the increased production of quinine, a treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms, which will be offered to other countries. Officials said Taiwan would also share its “digital quarantine system” to help other countries fight coronavirus spread. Taiwan’s epidemic strategy has won recognition from many in the international community. Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. would do its best to assist Taiwan to play an appropriate role at the World Health Assembly and that more countries have voiced their support for Taiwan, in the video “Taiwan to donate 10 million masks to COVID-19 stricken countries“, below:

So, let’s all try to stay home as much as possible! Wear mask or scarf or some coverings for mouth and nose when in public area. As for individual citizens, please wash your hands often (each time for at least 20 seconds), get tested if and when you can, stop shaking hands, observe social distancing (staying at least 6 feet from others), be sure to get sufficient rest, be well nourished, exercised, drink plenty of hot water and ginger tea, and decrease unnecessary social contacts.

Some of the basics needed in prepping for potential self-quarantine:

Hand cleanser (soap & water & hand sanitizer)
Cleaning products: for cleaning household surfaces such as countertops, faucets, door knobs, drawer pulls, light switches, telephone, handles of brooms, mops, etc., for reference list suggested by CDC, click HERE.)
Laundry detergent
Food (at least 3 weeks worth of staples: beans, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, frozen food, canned soup, shelf-stable milk, or dehydrated food, etc.)
Water (be it in bottled water form or activated carbon filter pitcher and/or distiller)
Face masks
Prescription meds (talk to your doctor as to how much of your prescription meds need to be stocked)
Over-the-counter medicine (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medicine, etc.)
Thermometer
Robust WiFi
Video conferencing services

Exercise guides or equipment
