Supreme Court justices heard the first oral arguments on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, in a controversial Louisiana abortion case. Louisiana state law requires that doctors to have admitting privileges in the local hospitals in order to perform abortion procedures. If this law is upheld by the Supreme Court, it is possible that every clinic in the state would be forced to close and there would be nationwide implications for access to abortion. This is the first abortion case being heard by the new conservative-majority Supreme Court, including two justices appointed by Trump, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Deliberation of Supreme Court justices’ decision will not take place until later in Spring of 2020. CBS News reporter Kate Smith joined CBSN AM to explain the arguments for both sides and the crucial role of Chief Justice John Roberts, in the video “Supreme Court hears arguments in Louisiana abortion case“, below:

Speaking on the floor of the United States Senate Thursday morning, Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blasted what he called the “shameful” remarks from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer outside the United States Supreme Court, saying that they reveal an effort by Democrats to “bully” the highest court with threats of violence. McConnell was responding to Schumer’s remarks at a rally outside the Supreme Court Wednesday, while a high-profile abortion case was being argued inside. “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions,” Schumer said, naming the two appointees of President Donald Trump, according to video of the rally available online, in the video “Mitch McConnell calls comments by Chuck Schumer outside U.S. Supreme Court “shameless”“, below:
