Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, that the state of Florida is moving forward with an agreement to purchase 20,000 acres of land owned by Kanter Real Estate LLC of western Broward County. Part of the land had been subjected to years of litigation over the right to drill an exploratory oil well in the Everglades. This purchase agreement would give the state of Florida 75 days to purchase the land for $16.5 million. The money would be coming from the Department of Environmental Protection or the South Florida Water Management District. If the deal will not be completed by June 30, 2020, then the price tag would increase to $18 million. This largest wetland purchase within the decade would save 20,000 acres of Florida land from oil drilling and saving Florida animals and their habitat. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his administration and the South Florida Water Management District have reached an agreement to purchase 20,000 acres of land in the Everglades, in the video “Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Agreement For Purchase Of 20,000 Acres Of Everglades Wetland“, below:
Governor DeSantis said during an event at Everglades Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale, “With this acquisition, there’ll be nearly 600,000 acres of wetlands in Water Conservation Area 3 (in the Everglades) that will be protected by public ownership for restoration and for recreation, and then obviously it will build off some of the things that we’re already doing.”
