When the founder of OPEC said as far as he could tell, oil is “the excrement of the devil”, Rachel Maddow knew that there is a book in there. In her “Blowout“, Rachel Maddow tried to figure out how to rein in and disempower forces of the oil industry that corrodes and corrupts democracy.
Rachel Maddow discusses her new book, the instant #1 New York Times bestseller BLOWOUT: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth (Crown, October 1, 2019), in conversation with W. Kamau Bell on the first night of her book tour at the Streicker Center in NYC, in the video “Blowout, a new book by Rachel Maddow“, below:
During discussion with Stephen Colbert, Rachel Maddow talks about the Resource Curse: a paradox such that some countries with an abundance of natural resources (such as fossil fuels and certain minerals) tend to have less economic growth, less democracy, and worse development outcomes than countries with fewer natural resources. This resource curse is not universal or inevitable, but affects certain types of countries or regions under certain conditions.
If natural resources that are to be extracted and sold internationally, revenues tend to go toward the elites and the government and therefore providing incentive for these people who have their life’s mission to stay in power in order to continue to obtain those revenues. Therefore, such countries would stop serving the needs of their people. This is the example of Resource Curse.
Rachel Maddow’s new book, “Blowout,” explains how the inner workings of the oil industry help explain Russia’s role as an international bad actor, in the video “Rachel Maddow: Russia Uses Oil And Gas As A Weapon“, below:
It takes a mind like Rachel Maddow’s to dissect the convoluted chaos of today’s current events and emerge with a single cause: not ideology, she says, but oil. In Blowout, the Emmy award-winning MSNBC host traces how the greed of the oil industry has corrupted the world, causing disasters both environmental and political, including, Maddow says, the Russian interference in the 2016 election. Through painstaking reporting, Maddow’s book reveals the extent to which the interests of oil companies influence every aspect of our lives, from the personal to the political. In conversation, Maddow will address how we can and must curb the power of the oil industry, for, as she warns: “Democracy either wins this one, or disappears.” in the video “Rachel Maddow in Conversation“, below:
