On Friday, October 25, 2019, former presidents and ordinary people alike, gathered at the Baltimore church to celebrate Congressman Elijah E. Cummings’ life. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remembered the late Rep. Elijah Cummings as a congressman who worked to make the future brighter for upcoming generations. “He held himself to a high standard, and that is why I have called him the North Star of Congress, our guiding light,” Pelosi said at Cummings’ funeral held at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Other speakers at the funeral included former President Barack Obama and Bill Clinton as well as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume paid tribute to the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, his friend, at a funeral held at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore. Mfume, who is also a former Democratic congressman from Maryland, recalled Cummings as “a good man with a good heart” who “taught us all how to hope, how to smile, how to laugh and how to cry.” Mfume added, “He taught us how to live and, with grace and dignity, he has taught us how to die.” in the video “WATCH: Kweisi Mfume’s full remembrance at Rep. Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings, the wife of Rep. Elijah Cummings, said the congressman’s work became harder toward the end of his life as he sustained personal attacks against himself and the city of Baltimore, which he served. “While he carried himself with grace and dignity in all public forums, it hurt him,” Rockeymoore-Cummings said in a passionate speech at her husband’s funeral. Yet, she added, Cummings always fought on. “He kept going. He kept standing. He kept working,” Rockeymoore-Cummings said. Elijah Cummings’ daughter Jennifer honored her father at his funeral on Oct. 25 in Baltimore by remembering how he taught her “the dual power of my beauty and my brilliance.” “Dad wanted me to understand and appreciate my blackness and truly feel that my rich brown skin was just as beautiful as alabaster or any shade of the rainbow,” Cummings said. “Thank you, dad, for also teaching me to be bold, to be confident and to stand in my power,” she added.
