President Trump announced on Twitter over the weekend that secret discussions with Taliban and Afghanistan leaders at Camp David have been canceled. “Face The Nation” moderator and CBS News senior foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan joined CBSN AM to explain the events leading up to the announcement and the impact of the decision, in the video “Why Trump canceled secret meeting with Taliban at Camp David“, below:
As a result of bombing on the eve of the talk, it became apparent that Taliban negotiators at the table do not have command and control over the fighters on the ground and there was no signed agreement which was demanded by Taliban publicly. It is interesting that Trump was the one who outed himself regarding this supposedly secret meeting by tweeting. Typically, diplomatic negotiations such as this would not be revealed until the deal is truly final. This anticipated agreement was just between USA and Taliban. Taliban is the insurgent group trying to overthrow the elected Afghanistan government at Kabul that USA is officially aligned with. There was no agreement to end the conflict yet. The Kabul (capital of Afghanistan) previously warned that if USA would go through with the agreement without including Kabul, civil war would break out. In the process of making this anticipated agreement public, President Trump has made it more difficult for the agreement to become a reality.
It is particularly offensive to many Republican that Camp David was the place where American leaders were hid during the 9/11 attack and now Trump wants to bring these Talibans (who gave Bin Laden safe havens to plan the 9/11 attack) to Camp David as statesman.
President Trump announced via Twitter that he had canceled a secret meeting with Taliban leaders. The president said the meeting was canceled following an attack that killed a U.S. service member last week, in the video “President Trump Cancels Secret Meeting With Taliban Leaders At Camp David, MSNBC“, below:

President Trump called off a meeting with Taliban leaders after the group admitted to a car bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed an American service member. The president is facing backlash for inviting the Taliban to Camp David for a meeting just days before the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, in the video “Trump Cancels Secret Talks With Taliban, Faces Backlash For Camp David Invitation, Nightly News“, Below:
US President Donald Trump says he has canceled peace talks with Afghanistan’s Taliban leaders at Camp David, tweeting that he had scrapped the secret meeting planned for Sunday after the Taliban took credit for an attack in Kabul earlier this week that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier. The US and the Taliban have been meeting since last year in the hopes of ending the Afghanistan conflict, in the video “Trump cancels peace talks with Taliban at Camp David, DW News“, below:
President Donald Trump said that Taliban leaders were to travel to the US for secret peace talks this weekend along with the President of Afghanistan at Camp David, but that the meeting has been canceled, in the video “Trump says secret meeting with Taliban was canceled“, below:
US President Donald Trump says he has cancelled a secret meeting with the Taliban in the United States. The leaders were supposed to meet at Camp David on Sunday. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says talks with the Taliban are now dead “for the time being” and the special envoy is being recalled. Meetings between the envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, and the Taliban had been ongoing in Qatar for nearly a year. The Taliban released a statement in response, saying “Americans will suffer more than anyone else” because of Trump’s decision to cancel the talks. The office of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says peace will only be possible if the Taliban stops launching attacks and holds direct talks with the government, in the video “Taliban warns US will ‘suffer more’ after Trump cancels talks“, below:
