After 13 weeks of protests in Hong Kong, tensions between leaderless demonstrators and Beijing are as high as ever. The “one country-two system” is under threat. Police in Hong Kong arrested 28 people in a 24-hour blitz. At least three prominent activists were taken into custody on Aug 30. Among those arrested was activist Joshua Wong. The 22-year-old was the face of the 2014 Umbrella Movement. More than 900 Hong Kong protesters have been arrested since protests in June of 2019.
Several of Hong Kong’s most prominent pro-democracy activists have been arrested. Two of them, Joshua Wong and Agnes Chow, have since been released on bail. The wave of arrests comes after a mass rally planned for Saturday was banned, in the video “Hong Kong arrests activists before major protest“, below:
Clashes broke out between protesters and police at Hong Kong’s Prince Edward station on Saturday in the 13th consecutive weekend of anti-government and anti-police demonstrations. Police were seen hitting passengers with their batons, spraying pepper spray and pointing rubber pellet guns toward demonstrators on the subway. A number of protesters were arrested and escorted off the station platform by police. Hong Kong police fired tear gas and used water cannons to spray demonstrators with blue-dyed water in the 13th straight weekend of protests.
