On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, the former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III testified publicly before two congressional panels, answering questions about his investigation of President Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The first hearing was before the House Judiciary Committee chaired by Rep. Jerry Nadler in the morning and the second hearing was before the House Intelligence Committee chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff in the afternoon.
Chairman Nadler: “Did you actually totally exonerate the president?” Mueller: “No.” in the video “Robert Mueller Testifies Under Oath That His Report Does Not Exonerate President Trump, MSNBC“, below:
Rep. Adam Schiff, chair of the House intelligence committee, questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller during his July 24, 2019, testimony about the extent of Russian efforts to sway the 2016 election in favor of President Donald Trump as well as Trump associates’ lies about their connections with Russia. Mueller, who led an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to President Donald Trump’s campaign, agreed to appear before Congress, but warned he would not go beyond what was already documented in his final report, in the video “WATCH: Adam Schiff’s full questioning of Robert Mueller, Mueller testimony“, below:
Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier questioned Mueller about whether Russian intervention in the 2016 election was a hoax. Mueller said: “It was not a hoax. The indictments we returned against the Russians, two different ones, were substantial in their scope.” He also explained what the American people should understand about the special counsel’s report, in the video “Mueller says Russia’s campaign interference “was not a hoax”“, below:
Congressman Cedric Richmond asked Robert Mueller, “So it’s fair to say the President tried to protect himself by asking staff to falsify records relevant to an ongoing investigation?” Robert Mueller said, “I would say that’s generally a summary.” in the video “Mueller: Trump Asked Staff To Falsify Records To Protect Himself Related To Investigation, MSNBC“, below:
Former special counsel Robert Mueller testified before the House Judiciary Committee where he answered questions about his investigation into Russia meddling in the 2016 election, in the video “Robert Mueller’s full testimony to House Judiciary committee“, below:
Former special counsel Robert Mueller is testifying before both the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees for a total of five hours Wednesday on the findings of his nearly two-year probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, in the video “Mueller Testimony live stream: Watch Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Congressional hearing today“, below:
Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance talks about the lines of questioning in the Mueller testimony, saying that the Mueller report’s toughest critics did not at all question the facts within the report, in the video “Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance: No One Actually Questioned The Facts In The Mueller Report, MSNBC“, below:
In a new TIME Magazine article, Joyce Vance writes that Mueller’s exchange with Rep. Val Demings where Mueller tells her that many Trump associates lied and that those lies impeded his investigation is the most important exchange in Mueller’s testimony. She discusses why with Lawrence O’Donnell, in the video “Joyce Vance On The Most Important Exchange In Mueller’s Testimony, The Last Word, MSNBC“, below:
Joyce Vance commented that”…the obstruction ultimately impacted their inability to charge a conspiracy or other crimes related to connections between the campaign and Russia and ultimately that obstruction of justice not just from the president but also from people around him. People who Mueller and the report tells us did not tell the whole truth, lies, and destroyed evidence. It is that obstructive behavior ultimately keep the American people in the dark about what happened.”
Fmr. Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal tells Lawrence O’Donnell how a prosecutor could get around the Justice Department rule that a sitting president cannot be indicted, in the video “Neal Katyal On How To Prosecute A Sitting President, The Last Word, MSNBC“, below:
