Apple To Split iTunes Into 3 Different Apps

Long before there was subscription streaming services, Apple iTunes existed back in 2001 and was the only way for people to add or remove music on their iPods. But the business model and interface of having the same software to buy movies, albums, and individual music tracks have become outdated amidst Spotify, Netflix, and Cupertino’s own Apple Music and Apple TV+ due to arrive this fall.
On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, Apple announced that iTunes will be replaced on Macs with three standalone apps that will handle music, podcasts and video separately. The three standalone apps are already available on iPhone and iPads, but iTunes remains the default media option on Macs to aggregate all of the music, movies, TV shows, and podcasts into one platform until the change to arrive in the next version of macOS, called Catalina.
