We Are In Constitutional Crisis-Attorney General Is In Contempt of Congress

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

(Please click on red links & note magenta)
The House Intelligence Committee had subpoenaed Justice Department today, May 8, 2019, on Capitol Hill and one subpoena denied by Attorney General William Barr. Therefore,Judiciary Committee voted on holding attorney general in contempt of Congress. Two subpoenas were issued at the end of today, both with bipartisan support, one from Senate Intelligence Committee (subpoena for Donald Trump Jr. to testify in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee) and one from the House Intelligence Committee. On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, the Republican Senate leader went to the Senate floor and said “case closed” and on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, the Republican leader of the Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena to Donald Trump Jr. This is the first time a member of the Trump family has been subpoenaed in the investigation of the President. Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, with the support of Republican House Intelligence Committee members, issued a subpoena to Attorney General William P. Barr for documents and materials related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, including all counterintelligence and foreign intelligence materials produced during the Special Counsel’s investigation, the full unredacted report, and the underlying evidence. Wednesday, May 15, 2019, will be the deadline for Congressman Schiff’s subpoena to William Barr to submit documents and materials related to Mueller’s investigation. After the House Judiciary Committee voted”: it was voted 24:16 to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress. No date was set for when the full House vote on contempt of Congress resolution.
Congressman Adam Schiff stated, “The Department repeatedly pays lip service to the importance of a meaningful accommodation process, but it has only responded to our efforts with silence or outright defiance.“
Chairman Jerry Nadler had encountered similar experience in dealing with William Barr and the Justice Department.
House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff says the House may join the Senate Intelligence Committee and subpoena Don Trump Jr. over inconsistencies in his testimony to Congress, in the video “Chairman Adam Schiff: The Intelligence Committee May Subpoena Don Trump Jr., The Last Word, MSNBC“, below:
To prove that Attorney General does not have to break the law in order to comply with the subpoena, the Democrats accepted, by unanimous voice vote, a Republican amendment,to clarify the grand jury information will not be subject to the subpoena unless a federal court approves the release of that information.
In a historic rebuke of the Trump administration, the House Judiciary Committee votes to hold Attorney General Bill Barr in contempt of Congress for refusing to hand over the full, unredacted Mueller report, as the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena Donald Trump Jr.,Director of “Defending Democracy Together”, Bill Kristol, tells Ari Melber Trump stonewalling Congress over the Mueller report is “an attempt to prevent congress from seriously considering” the “question of impeachment.” in the video “Historic Rebuke: Trump AG Barr Held In Contempt, Donald Trump Jr., The Beat With Ari Melber, MSNBC“, below:
Today, President Trump, for the first time ever, claimed executive privilege, to prevent Congress from even privately seeing the full, unredacted Mueller report. The Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler, after overseeing 5 hours of judiciary hearings, addressing the press and the public, telling the nation that we are in a new phase of constitutional crisis. It is now the time to determine whether our government will be able to sustain our republic or be turning into a tyrannical government. Jerry Nadler indicated that “President has stated that his administration will oppose all subpoenas, and in fact, all document requests are going unsatisfied. This is unprecedented. If allowed to go unchecked, this obstruction means the end of congressional oversight.”
It is believed by many that fighting for these documents in the next 5-6 months will be a waste of time. At this point, there is overwhelming push for impeachment. Whether or not the Democrats or Congress will be able to step up to the plate to carry out what is necessary remains to be seen.
The showdown between the White House and Congress over the Mueller report is escalating even further. House Democrats took initial steps to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt Wednesday, with House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler calling the decision “grave and momentous.” Lisa Desjardins reports and joins Judy Woodruff and Yamiche Alcindor to discuss, in the video “Is showdown over Mueller report becoming a constitutional crisis?“, below:
