As part of our Spring Cleaning, I was clearing out our shoe closet and found multiple pairs of shoes of mine that are in fairly good condition, but have gotten rather tight over the years. Since I’m a great fan of comfort (have not worn any high heeled shoes for over 20 years), these tighter shoes have gone into semi-retirement, taking up the closet space. In the spirit of our Earth Day week for reduce-recycle-reuse, I thought “There’s got to be a better way!”
Yes, there is now a Shoes4Kids non-profit charitable organization locally, consisting of local businesses, churches, community organizations partnering together to provide new shoes and mentoring programs for fatherless and at risk children and their families here in Central Florida, in addition to collecting old shoes to be sent to other needy areas or countries . Shoes4Kids has been designed to create a safety net for children who might otherwise fall through the cracks of existing programs. Shoes represent a foundation for both individuals and the community. This Foundation will truly transform Orlando into, “the City Beautiful,” a city that is known for its love of people in the community. So, let’s help this organization to reach its goal by donating some of our shoes, consider volunteering for this organization and/or making donations for purchasing new shoes. Since December of 2011 when Shoes4Kids kicked off their inaugural 5k run event at Lake Eola at the Reeves Terrace Community Center, Shoes4KidsUSA had distributed over 8,000 pairs of new shoes throughout Orlando and surrounding areas.
