On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, Jim O’Brien is officially sworn in as the new mayor of Windermere, FL, taking place of Gary Bruhn, who has served as the mayor for Town of Windermere for 15 years.
Jim O’Brien has served on Windermere Town Council for eight years (4 terms), as Council Liaison for Development Review Board, Administration and Police Department. He is a native of West Palm Beach and has received a bachelor degree in social work and a master degree in education from Florida Atlantic University. After working in nonprofit in South Florida for few years, he made an excellent choice by marrying a Windermere native, Kristin, and moving to the town of Windermere to raise their family.
With an interest in public service and a pedigree of having a grandfather who served as a county commissioner in South Florida, Jim O’Brien started attending Town Council meetings and learning about history of the community of Windermere. After serving on the town’s tree board, he decided to run for the Windermere Town Council in 2010 and was elected in 2011.
During the eight years O’Brien served on the Windermere Town Council, he helped rebuilding the town’s foundation, reviewing and revising town policies, and seeing Windermere with a new police chief and a new town manager. After former Mayor Gary Bruhn announced, at the end of 2018, of his decision to retire and move outside of the Windermere town limit, O’Brien received a great deal of encouragement from his family, friends, and people he respect in the community, such as former Mayor Gary Bruhn, to run for office to be the Mayor of Town of Windermere.
Jim O’Brien is aiming to keep the town of Windermere small and smart, to continue growing the town’s infrastructure at the optimal level, making the right investment choices, and maintain the small community feel that people of Town of Windermere treasure. His priorities as the new Mayor of Windermere will be: promoting transparency and efficiency in communications, improving communications with residents, and increasing volunteer committee participation. Another important issue on the agenda is to update infrastructure improvement in water, sanitary sewer, roadways, and town facilities. He welcomes inputs from residents of town of Windermere, both in bringing forth problems as well as offering solutions.
