President Trump, dissatisfied with the funding (about $1 billion) Congress is providing him for barriers at the southern border, will sign the bill to fund the government after Friday and declare a national emergency to free up more funds to build his wall. The president’s decision to declare a national emergency is already facing much criticism from some Republicans, and potential lawsuits. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn’t rule out a legal challenge on Thursday. Mr. Trump will address the situation at the border from the White House Rose Garden Friday at 10 a.m. Eastern. The president’s address can be watched in the live player below, and CBS News will also air a special report at 10 a.m. , in the video streamlived 2 hours ago, “Trump declares ‘national emergency’ to fund border wall, full announcement“, below:
Given the poll result of Quinnipiac University between Jan 25-28, 2019, regarding Trump’s using emergency executive powers to fund the border wall:
- 31% Approve
- 66% Disapprove
and the fact that border crossings had decreased dramatically since 2000, the idea of building this wall does seem a waste of American tax payers’ dollars. Furthermore, taking the power of the purse away from Congress, spending money without Congressional approval, is unconstitutional. Therefore, such an act will most likely be met with legal challenges, meaning the money will be held up. Republican Senator Marco Rubio commented, “We have a crisis at our Southern border, but no crisis justifies violating the constitution.”
CNN’s David Gergen says that President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration is different than ones made by presidents in the past because there is no emergency.
Finally, is this a prelude to dissolving the Congress? Let’s take a look at what some experts and political analysts had to say, in the video “President Donald Trump To Declare A National Emergency Over The Wall, The Last Word, MSNBC“, below:
