Mesmerizing Rotating Ice Disk In Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

(Please click on red links & note magenta)
Here is another demonstration of nature’s love of circular shapes and symmetry. A rotating ice disk appeared in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine, first noticed on Monday, January 14, 2019, spinning in a lazy, counterclockwise fashion. Besides being loved by the Presumpscot ducks for a slow motion ride, this ice disk became an instant sensation at social media. Westbrook is now world famous for this spinning ice disk, even gathering tourists from other parts of the country. Of course, in this day of social media, this ice disk also has its own twitter account 🙂
The spinning action is caused by the melted ice water heading down into the river, spinning the disk at a constant rate. Its rotation can be driven by the current of the river and temperature changes in the water underneath the ice, creating a vortex leading to the spinning of the ice disk, according to the Chief Meteorologist of CBS Boston’s WBZ-TC News, Eric Fisher. The phenomenon required the perfect combination of air temperature, ice production, and flow condition for this to form. It may not happen again for many years.
Possible explanation for the formation of this phenomenon may be viewed in the video below:
