In a recent discussion with one of my friends, I’ve come to realize that many people may not fully appreciate the relationship between correlation and causation. Many social scientists may think that “correlation does not imply causation” but I’d like to expand upon that and say, “correlation does not prove causation“. In the video by Dr. Jonathan Haidt, “Blind Pursuit of Equal Outcome leads to an “Abomination of Justice”“, many examples have been presented to help clarify why “correlation does not prove causation”.
- It offers an invitation to look more closely. There could well be differential treatment
- Look for 3rd variables and reverse correlation
- Experimental manipulation is next step
When social justice demands equal treatment, it is justice, right and good. But when social justice demands equal outcomes for all groups, without concern for inputs or 3rd variables, it becomes unjust.
