People of planet earth called for Climate Law, Rise for Climate, Climate Action Summit in 2018. Global Climate Action Summit 2018 took place from Sep. 12-14, 2018, at San Francisco, California, along with protesters in over 90 cities throughout the planet, to demonstrate their displeasure in various national governments’ speed in responding to climate change. Many were upset with the lack of progress following the 2015 Paris Accord on climate change and President Trump’s policy on climate change. Despite the fact that Trump had pulled United States out of the Paris Accord, United States had reached halfway toward meeting its pledge for Paris goal, which was to cut its greenhouse gas emissions 26%-28% of its 2005 level by 2025. California demonstrators wanted government officials to take action in encouraging policies to switch to renewable energy before it is too late. Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill for carbon-free power by 2045. Let’s hope the show of strength here would spur national and local politicians, mayors, business leaders, university professors and students, and activists throughout USA, to take actions. For more extreme weather conditions and natural disasters would surely continue if the issue of climate change were not addressed with speed and commitment.
The need to switch from fossil fuel to renewable energy is both ethical and economical now. Many believe that climate change is a battle that will be won or lost at the grassroots, from bottom up. Therefore, local leaders will play an important role in making that happen. Green economy will be producing many jobs.Divestment, stopping expanding the oil fields (stop providing new permits for new oil fields or opening oil fields next to people’s homes), and grassroot movements are effective methods. The time is now. Science demands action.
