On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Amazon (AMZN) total market value surpassed $1 trillion briefly, becoming the second company, after Apple, to be ascending into the trillion territory since early August this year . According to senior index analyst for S&P, Amazon and Apple combined now make up more than 8% of the entire S&P 500. It took Apple 41 years to reach the $1 trillion in market cap, while Amazon did it in 24 years. Both companies reached the trillion territory by consistently improving their core products, but Amazon also diversified its portfolio very quickly, dominating in areas from online retail to cloud. Some of the areas that would help to drive next phase of growth for Amazon are: AWS(Amazon Web Service), Health and Pharmacy (purchasing online pharmacy PillPack and piloting its own health clinics for employees and rethinking medical records), Ads (by selling product search results, allowing sellers to buy sponsored product slots), and AI and voice (Amazon Alexa, AWS, Amazon Go Store), and Physical stores (i.e. Whole Foods, physical bookstores, and AI powered cashierless Go stores). Even though Amazon’s price-to-earning ratio is about 180, investors are far more excited about Amazon than those grocery, and general retail stocks with price-to-earning ratio between 20 to 40.
