How Bad Is It For President Donald Trump ?

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

It does appear as though President Donald Trump has been implicated, by Michael Cohen, as an unindicted co-conspirator to a crime. While Michael Cohen did not mention Trump’s name in the federal courtroom, he did say a candidate told him to pay hush money and that the intent was to influence the 2016 election. Will Cohen be able to save himself? The panel discusses, in the video “How Bad Is This For President Donald Trump; What Are The Possibilities?” below:
The law professor of George Washington University, Jonathan Turley, interpreted this as a campaign finance violation case with Michael Cohen saying:
- I knew I was committing a crime
- I did it at the request of Donald Trump
- I am willing to give evidence in details as to how we carry that out
Cohen’s sentencing will take place in December of 2018.
Legal analyst Danny Cevallos indicates that Cohen may be cooperating now or in the future with Mueller’s Team and this information may not be publicly available.
Maggie Haberman tweeted, “Trump folks are worried about impeachment more than before. The thinking goes like this: this is something tangible, not a theoretical. And it didn’t come from Mueller. Does not mean it will happen, but this has moved to a different stage in their minds.”
Elise Jordan, former aide to the George W. Bush White House, stated, “Donald Trump is indeed a scumbag. Voters know that. They do not expect him to be the kind of man who treats his wife with decency and dignity. And that is known and is not necessarily going to move the most hard core voters…. ”
Jon Meacham, the historian and Random House Executive Editor, presents the parallels of summer of 1973 to what is happening: chain of events were beginning to unfold, leading to disclosing Nixon having done something during summer of 1974 similar to what Trump had done, accused by their lawyers, in a plea deal. Nixon was disclosed, on tape, orchestrating for cover-up, using federal agencies to block one another, to try to keep the heat away from his own White House’s political espionage. What ultimately broke Nixon’s presidency was due to combination of 3 things:
- His own lawyer, the White House Counsel John W. Dean turned on him
- Revelation of more evidence one can possibly imagine, Alexander Butterfield revealing Nixon’s own recordings
- He was guilty
President Trump claims the crimes his former lawyer Michael Cohen has pleaded guilty to are not crimes, as Cohen’s own lawyer Lanny Davis claims there’s “no dispute” that Trump committed a crime. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries claims Republicans in Congress are part of a “cover up caucus” for Trump, below:
Fallout continued today after a guilty plea and a guilty verdict for two men with close ties to President Trump in federal court on a combined 16 counts, ranging from tax fraud to campaign finance violations. Yamiche Alcindor, Lisa Desjardins and Larry Noble, a campaign finance expert and former general counsel for the Federal Election Commission, join Judy Woodruff to discuss the latest developments, in the video “How are Republicans and Democrats reacting to Cohen and Manafort charges?” below:
Supreme Court has never ruled on whether or not a sitting President of the United States can be indicted and tried. There are mixed opinions on this topic. The politics of impeachment is all about that. From Andrew Johnson, to Richard Nixon, to Bill Clinton, the nature of impeachment is that a high crime and misdemeanor is really decided by the majority of the House at any given moment. Impeachment is different from indictment. The Supreme Court may have to enter the scene and rule on the situation before the final act will be executed. The question of “to impeach or not to impeach Trump” will really depend on whether or not the majority of the House will decide to impeach Trump. At the moment, it does appear that whether or not the House will be mostly Democrats or Republicans would determine whether or not Trump will be impeached. So voters, Trump’s future is in your hands!
