The Florida PSC (Public Service Commission) announced on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, that there will be a new area code, 689, added to Central Florida. The new 689 code will overlay the current 407 area code for Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and parts of Lake and Volusia counties. However, it will only go into effect after current 407 numbers are exhausted (only new phone numbers m the area will be assigned). According to PSC, this new addition is long overdue. It is happening due to a high demand in Central Florida for phone numbers..According to a news release, the implementation of 689 was originally going to take place in July of 2002. But due to an “aggressive push for number conservation plans,” the PSC delayed it for 16 years. PSC chairman Art Graham said, “We’ve extended use of the 407 area code for as long as possible, but all available numbers are expected to be assigned within the next year. The NANPA (North American Numbering Plan Administration) can now begin processing the 689 area code for efficient implementation when needed.”
