I just came across a post in slashdot.org about a newly developed tool by Google that can forecast patient outcomes: how long patients may stay in hospitals;their odds of re-admission;chances they will die soon, etc. Google documented some of this tool’s abilities in May;for example, by taking 175,639 data points into consideration, Google’s tool estimated that a particular patient’s odds at dying during her stay at the hospital was 19.9%, up from 9.3% that the hospital’s computers had estimated. Google’s next step is moving this predictive system into clinics. The AI chief Jeff Dean’s health research unit (sometimes referred to as Medical Brain), is working on many AI tools that would help to predict symptoms and disease with a level of accuracy that is met with both hope and alarm. The advances made by Medical Brain team helps Google to break into new market. Among many things, Google’s tool has the ability to sift through notes buried in PDFs or scribbled on old charts.
