Kapoho Bay & Vacationland of Big Island Under Siege

There has been at least 12,000 earthquakes on Hawaii’s Big Island in the past 30 days. It is unclear exactly how many homes have been affected, but Hawaii Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno said it was in the hundreds. Magno said at least 117 homes (not including those affected in Kapoho Bay and Vacationland) have been destroyed since the lava began to flow. The lava flow extended 0.8 miles from the shore, reaching beach lots in Kapoho Bay (with about 350 homes) and Vacationland (with about 150 homes). Lava from one of the fissures entered Kapoho Bay late Sunday (June 3, 2018) or early Monday (June 4, 2018), forcing billowing clouds of steam into the atmosphere as hot lava hit the Pacific Ocean. Fissure 8 was producing large amounts of lava, destroying homes on Tuesday (June 5, 2018).
