I.R.S. Gives Taxpayers One Day Extension To File

Even though the normal deadline to file one’s tax return is on April 15. This year, April 15, 2018, falls on a Sunday, followed by the Emancipation Day (a holiday in Washington DC to mark the anniversary for the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act which President Abraham Lincoln signed on April 16, 1862.) on Monday, April 16, 2018. So the actual official deadline was on Tuesday, April 17, 2018….until the computer glitch that helped to postpone the deadline to Wednesday midnight, April 18, 2018.

“I’d strongly advise folks who owe any federal taxes and cannot pay online to mail a check or money order to the IRS to the appropriate address,” said Patrick Thomas, director of Notre Dame Law School’s Tax Clinic.
IRS is expecting to receive 17 million returns this week and 14 million extension requests.
IRS’s technical difficulties affects all tax preparers and tax returns.
