Dear Friends & Neighbors,

This afternoon, Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg began his first of two hearings on the Capitol Hill, answering questions on the mishandling of Facebook users’ personal data. Recalling our previous post on “Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Apologizes For The Breach,” Mr. Zuckerberg’s appearance before Congress is prompted by the revelation that Cambridge Analytica (a political consulting firm linked to the Trump campaign)’s harvesting personal data of about 87 million Facebook users to psychologically profile voters during the 2016 election.
In his first appearance before Congress since he launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm room 14 years ago, Mark Zuckerberg took responsibility this afternoon for how his social network has been improperly used for political means. For viewing of the full session, please view this videos below:
Facebook, serving more than 2 billion people, has been a powerful tool in enabling people to connect, fundraising for worthwhile projects (raising money for hurricane victims), and instigating policy change (such as March For Our Lives). But to insure that no one will abuse personal data of Facebook or any other social media users for foreign interference in election, fake news, hate speech, or political harm in the future, much more safeguarding, monitoring, and right kind of regulations would need to be implemented. As our society advance technologically, information, personal data, and privacy protection will need to be better secured.
Zuckerberg promised, during the hearing, that Facebook will take on a more proactive position on increasing regular spot checking, reviewing of apps, and audits.
