EPA Chief Edward Scott Pruitt Is Under Multiple Investigations

Edward Scott Pruitt, the fourteenth administrator of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), was nominated for the position by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the United States Senate to lead the EPA on Feb. 17, 2017. Pruitt rejects the scientific consensus that human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are a primary contributor to climate change. As EPA administrator, Pruitt reversed and delayed numerous environmental rules, relaxed enforcement of existing rules, and halted the agency’s efforts to combat climate change.

Recently, some of his administrative practices have come under scrutiny:
- his controversial travel expense: at least $90,000 travel bills, mostly from first-class flights and one $36,000 military jet from Cincinnati to New York
- his controversial living arrangements: leasing a condo in Washington D.C. at a discounted rate from a lobbyist whose clients were regulated by the EPA
Pruitt is under at least four investigations by OIG (Office of Inspector General) opened last year at the request of Democrats in Congress:
- Pruitt’s travel audit that was expanded twice
- Pruitt’s four day $40,000 trip to Morocco promoting the use of American natural gas, but EPA has no role in natural gas exports
- Pruitt’s $25,000 soundproof security booth purchase for his office
- Pruitt’s use of EPA enforcement agents to provide him with 24/7 security detail may be improperly pulling resources away from enforcement programs against polluters
