The digital firm that worked for President Trump’s election campaign, Cambridge Analytica, was found to have abused Americans’ personal information via Facebook. On March 21, 2018, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg broke his silence and tried to quell the crisis by releasing a lengthy public statement, conceding that there has been “a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us…If we can’t protect your data, we don’t deserve to serve you.” But now a hidden video scandal has revealed how Cambridge Analytica has abused Facebook data and multiple social media platforms to push, entrap, and lie for political purposes. Facebook responded by temporarily suspending Cambridge Analytica. Roger McNamee, a former mentor to Zuckerberg and an early investor in Facebook calls the response “totally inadequate”. Apparently this temporary suspension was insufficient for Wall Street, resulting in the drop of $50 billion of Facebook stock value or $9 billion decrease in Zuckerberg’s personal wealth.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized on March 21, 2018, for the way Facebook has been handling the Cambridge Analytica debacle, affecting 50 million Facebook users’ data.
