Trump administration is perhaps the first White House administration that may be crowned with the title of “revolving door”. Of its 61 senior officials, 21 have left the Trump administration, demonstrating the highest turn over rate during the first year of any of the White House administration. Today, Gary Cohn, the Chief Economic Advisor to President Donald Trump, is also planning his exit this year, announcing his resignation.
Gary Cohn, who had once been rumored as a potential next chief of staff, will leave the White House in the wake of his fierce disagreement with the President’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. “Gary has been my chief economic adviser and did a superb job in driving our agenda, helping to deliver historic tax cuts and reforms and unleashing the American economy once again. He is a rare talent, and I thank him for his dedicated service to the American people,” Trump said in a statement.
Gary Cohn was not successful in convincing President Trump to take a less aggressive position on trade (instead, Trump is imposing 25% tariff on steel and 10% tariff on aluminum). This aggressive position on tariff would undoubtedly lead to trade war and negative outcome for American manufacturers, in Cohn’s opinion.
