Why & How Are The Left And Right Different ?

Since our previous post, “Jordan B. Peterson on Gender Pay Gap“, I’ve been quite intrigued by many of Professor Peterson’s talks. In 2017, Professor Jordan Peterson traveled to New York University to talk with Dr. Jonathan Haidt about, among other things, disgust, purity, fear and belief; the perilous state of the modern university; and his work with Heterodox Academy (https://heterodoxacademy.org/) an organization designed to draw attention to the lack of diversity of political belief in the humanities and the social sciences.
The focus of discussion is on biological basis of behavior and relationship between fundamental motivation system of thoughts. From viewing principal of morality to seeing the difference between what the politically right vs. left care about, the two scholars help us to make sense of the reasoning behind the fundamental differences between two socio-political inclinations. People who are more conservative tend to display more fearful behavior. It is interesting to note that orderliness is strongly associated with disgust and conservatism. Peterson also mentions pre-designed neuronal networks at the cortical level, leading to the discussion of innateness (structured in advance of experience, but experience may still be able to revise it) vs. social construction and whether there is biological underlying basis.
Sanctity may function as a unifying center, enabling those circling in the same direction to be in the same group or tribe. It is also interesting to hear their discussion on university students’ behavior on campuses being compared to religion revival.
From cognitive level to the physical level, perhaps the desire for physical border/wall by Trump may be explained by the pre-designed innate need for orderliness. It is also mind blowing to find that there is a strong correlation between frequency of infectious diseases with authoritarian political beliefs.
The need from both the left and right (consideration of risk and opportunities) enhances our society, as long as there is free speech to insure further continued open discussions.
On the opposite end of spectrum from disgust, Dr. Haidt also talks about elevated sentiment upon being exposed to act of kindness and gratitude. It is important to be able to understand the reasoning of both left and right in order to maintain an open dialogue. It is also important to keep a balanced ratio of left and right in order to be optimal for the society as a whole.
To insure university promoting openness and diversity in humanities and the social sciences, Dr. Haidt chose to work with Heterodox Academy.
The ideological rigidity of university campuses is being discussed. It is important for leaders of universities or businesses not to take sides but remain open-minded to dialogues.

Dr. Haidt mentions the difference of modern youth from youth of long ago, due to:
- loss of unsupervised play
- social media
- boys’ aggression is more physical while girls’ aggression is more emotional and social
- rise in polarization
Many solutions are offered in the video above.
Inclusion is a virtue unless carried to the extreme (such as not allowing kids to have best friend).
Dr. Haidt is Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business and a social psychologist. He studies the psychology of morality and the moral emotions. He has been described as a top global thinker by both Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. Dr. Haidt is the author of three books:
